Frederick Taylor, better known as Squire Frederick, is the official Town Crier of Annapolis, Md. The city's mayor, Ellen Moyer, announced Taylor's appointment by letter on May 24, 2006. According to Moyer's letter: "As crier, you will especially be called on over the next three years to announce to one and all the ensuing celebration of Annapolis Charter 300, commemorating our City's rich history in the struggles for liberty and civil rights for all citizens." Squire Frederick's official term as Town Crier runs from June 1, 2006 through Dec. 31, 2008.
Squire Frederick is one of 37 members of the American Guild of Town Criers. The Guild was "created as a way for modern day town criers to meet and compete to show that this ancient and honorable profession still exists." All members of the Guild are duly appointed.
The Squire has worked as a colonial tour guide for Watermark since his retirement from the federal government in Dec. 1996. A history major and University of Maryland graduate, he has appeared in a variety of acting and production roles with Colonial Players of Annapolis and other community theaters. During the winter months you can catch Squire Frederick in his role as public address announcer for the University of Maryland - Baltimore County's men's and women's basketball teams. |
