Information about the North American Town Criers Championship in Annapolis, Md., on May 2, 3, & 4, 2008.

The 2008 NATC Championship will be held May 1-4 in conjunction with CharterFest, one of the signature events of Annapolis Alive, the yearlong celebration of the chartering of Annapolis, Md., by Queen Anne in 1708. Lodging for the Championship will most likely be at Doubletree Hotel Annapolis, with funds provided by Watermark, the largest sponsor of the competition thus far.

Tentative plans for the event include: a VIP reception and press conference aboard one of Watermark's signature vessels; a children's event and breakfast at the William Paca House & Garden; and tours of the Naval Academy & Historic Annapolis for criers and their escorts.

There will be two or three cries in the competition. Tentative themes for the cries are: (1) Queen Anne (a serious cry); (2) on being 300 (a humorous cry); and 3) an "open" topic of each crier's personal interest. Cash awards and trophies will be given to the top four finishers with a "Best Dressed" prize for escorts.

Community members - politicans, distinguished guests, & citizens - will be invited to judge the competition.
